The last few summers have gotten away from me. I’ve been consumed with family weddings, travel and the birth of a new baby. I would find ourselves knee deep in summer and I realize that my great ideas of summer activities with the boys are not going be realized because the schedule was already full with other commitments. Life has been getting in the way. This is frustrating since Seattle is so beautiful in the summer. Last year we got our act in gear after I had a meltdown in mid-July and I decided that I needed to enjoy this time with the boys before it they get much older and it is too late.
So this summer I am taking the bull by the horns (or the schedule by the planner) and getting ahead of it. Over the weekend we made a list of the summer activities we wanted to do. Everyone contributed (well Will didn’t have many coherent ideas to add but he is credited nonetheless). I put the ideas on a poster board that we then hung in the playroom. As we complete the activities, we are going to put stickers on the board indicating what activities have been completed.
My hope is that this will be a way to keep these activities top of mind and for me to remember that it is time to get off the computer and have fun. The boys will like putting the stickers up and seeing how many things we have completed.
Our summer is already scheduled with lots of trips, two weeks on the Lange Ranch in California, at least three more camping trips, soccer and golf camp for Jack, and a visit from Unkie, Auntie and Oliver. Yes, we now have a to-do list for fun. Welcome to raising kids in the new millennium.
Some of the things on our list are:
- Find a new ice cream place
- Watch them throw fish at Pike Place Market
- Go to the beach
- Swim in the lake
- Make tie dye t-shirts
- Paint and do art projects
Hopefully my grand plan will work this year. Watch for posts of our progress.
What fun things do you have planned for the summer and are you already as overcommitted as we are?
